Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22 by 192 countries. GOJO Industries, a leader in hand hygiene and skin health and inventors of PURELL® Hand Sanitizer, is a strong supporter of Earth Day and committed to finding sustainable solutions that are good for the people and the planet.
“Earth Day was first launched in 1970,” said Nicole Koharik, Global Sustainability Marketing Director at GOJO. “At GOJO, social and environmental mindedness started for us a bit earlier.. Although they didn’t call what they were doing sustainability, GOJO founders Goldie and Jerry Lippman built the idea of being good social and environmental stewards into how they worked and lived, and that translated then and today into everything we do as a company.”
On April 22, GOJO employees will celebrate the accomplishment of reaching 2015 sustainability goals to reduce water use, solid waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) a year early. The company’s hard work to work in more sustainable ways resulted in the reduction of water usage by 49 million gallons between 2010 and 2013, reduction of solid waste generated by 36 percent and reduction of GHG by 46 percent.
Part of the celebration on April 22 will include the refurbishing of previously used soap dispensers for a second life as birdhouses, toad homes or whatever the employee desires. GOJO is also collaborating with the Akron Art Museum and Akron Zoo to educate community members about the importance of waste reduction by supporting both organization’s Earth Day events on April 26. As part of the April 26 festivities the art museum and zoo patrons will design their own creation out of previously used soap dispensers for reuse as shelters for wildlife.
